Neospirifer was named by Fredericks (1919) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u P Djhu Sepkoski's reference number: 400,411]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Neospiriferinae.

It was reranked as Spirifer (Neospirifer) by Reed (1944).

It was assigned to Spirifer by Reed (1944); to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); to Spiriferidae by Shen et al. (2003); and to Neospiriferinae by Williams et al. (2006).
