Taxonomy
Notospirifer was named by Harrington (1955) [Sepkoski's age data: C Step-l P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 427,437,712]. It is the type genus of Notospiriferinae.

It was assigned to Ingelarellinae by Begg and Ballard (1991); to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Notospiriferinae by Williams et al. (2006).
