Ochotathyris was named by Dagys (1974) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 1239]. It is the type genus of Ochotathyridinae.
It was assigned to Spirigerellidae by Bychkov et al. (1976); to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ochotathyridinae by Williams et al. (2002).
