Orthospirifer was named by Pitrat (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: D Give-l D Fras-u Sepkoski's reference number: 64]. Its type is Orthospirifer missouriensis.

It was assigned to Spinocyrtiidae by Pitrat (1975) and Williams et al. (2006).
