Variopelta brevicervicata was named by Fritz (1991). Its type specimen is GSC 91723, a cephalon/head (cranidium), and it is a mold. Its type locality is Collection 90653, which is in a Dyeran marine shale/limestone in the Illtyd Formation of Canada.
