Plectospira was named by Cooper (1942) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg C Vise-l Sepkoski's reference number: 897,955]. It is the type genus of Plectospirinae.

It was assigned to Plectospirinae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002).
