Paederus was named by Fabricius (1775). It is extant. It is the type genus of Paederidae, Paederini, Paederina.
It was assigned to Eleuterata by Fabricius (1775); to Coleoptera by Latreille (1796); to Staphyliniae by Latreille (1802); to Staphylinidae by Wickham (1913); and to Paederina by Bouchard et al. (2011), Schomann and Solodovnikov (2017) and Jenkins Shaw et al. (2024).
