Taxonomy
Pterospirifer was named by Dunbar (1955) [Sepkoski's age data: P Asse P Guad Sepkoski's reference number: 2]. Its type is Terebratulites alatus. It is the type genus of Pterospiriferinae.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pterospiriferinae by Williams et al. (2006).
