Taxonomy
Spirifer (Purdonella) was named by Reed (1944) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc-l P Djhu Sepkoski's reference number: 2,1200]. It is the type subgenus of Purdonellinae.

It was reranked as Purdonella by Sepkoski (2002), Waterhouse (2004) and Williams et al. (2006).

It was assigned to Spirifer by Reed (1944); to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Purdonellinae by Waterhouse (2004) and Williams et al. (2006).
