Taxonomy
Sarganostega was named by Cooper and Grant (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-l P Djhu Sepkoski's reference number: 7,538]. Its type is Sarganostega transversalis. It is the type genus of Sarganostegidae.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Sarganostegidae by Williams et al. (2006).
