Septospirifer was named by Waterhouse (1971) [Sepkoski's age data: P Asse P Sakm Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. Its type is Septospirifer tatondukensis.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Neospiriferinae by Williams et al. (2006).
