Spinolepismatina was named by Dagys (1974) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. It is the type genus of Spinolepismatininae.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Spinolepismatininae by Williams et al. (2006).
