Spinospirifer was named by Martynova (1961) [Sepkoski's age data: D m Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. Its type is Spirifer (Lamellispirifer) nuraensis.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Gerkispiridae by Williams et al. (2006).
