Spirinella was named by Johnston (1941). Its type is Spirinella caecistriata.

It was assigned to Reticulariidae by Jin and Chatterton (1997); to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Rhenothyridinae by Williams et al. (2006).
