Squamularia was named by Gemmellaro (1899) [Sepkoski's age data: P Dora Sepkoski's reference number: 1128]. Its type is Squamularia rotundata.

It was reranked as Reticularia (Squamularia) by Diener (1903).

It was assigned to Reticularia by Diener (1903); to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); to Reticulariinae by Shen et al. (2003) and Williams et al. (2006); and to Elythidae by Verna and Angiolini (2011).
