Taxonomy
Serphites gigas was named by Kozlov and Rasnitsyn (1979). Its type specimen is PIN 3311/74, an exoskeleton, and it is an inclusion in amber. Its type locality is Taimyr amber, Yantardakh Hill (PIN collection 3311), which is in a Santonian terrestrial amber in the Kheta Formation of the Russian Federation.
