Tipispirifer was named by Grant (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-m Sepkoski's reference number: 403]. Its type is Tipispirifer oppilatus.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Spiriferellidae by Williams et al. (2006).
