Aenigmatodes regularis was named by Bolton (1921). Its type specimen is British Museum In. 18604, a wing, and it is an impression. Its type locality is Monckton Main Colliery, which is in a Westphalian B delta plain siliciclastic in the United Kingdom. It is the type species of Aenigmatopsis.
It was recombined as Aenigmatopsis regularis by Handlirsch (1937).
