Viligella was named by Dagys (1965) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. Its type is Mentzelia rotunda.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); to Spiriferininae by Williams et al. (2006); and to Jiangdaspiriferinae by He and Chen (2016).
