Xerospirifer was named by Havlicek (1978) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Acrospiriferinae by Williams et al. (2006).
