Septatrypa was named by Kozlowski (1929). Its type is Septatrypa secreta. It is the type genus of Septatrypidae.
It was assigned to Atrypida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Septatrypinae by Jin and Chatterton (1997), Musteikis and Modzalevskaya (2002) and Williams et al. (2002).
