Catatrypa was named by Mizens (1993) [Sepkoski's age data: S Sepkoski's reference number: 881]. Its type is Catatrypa schemachensis.

It was assigned to Atrypida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Spinatrypinae by Williams et al. (2002).
