Goniatites sinuosus was named by Hall (1843). Its type specimen is AMNH 5887/1, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Manticoceras sinuosum by Bogoslovsky (1969), Korn and Klug (2002) and House and Kirchgasser (2008).
