Manticoceras rhynchostoma was named by Clarke (1898). Its type specimen is NYSM 3796, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Sphaeromanticoceras rhynchostoma by Korn and Klug (2002); it was recombined as Sphaeromanticoceras rhynchostomum by House and Kirchgasser (2008).
