Microgasteroidae was named by Förster (1862). It is extant. Its type is Microgaster.

It was reranked as the subfamily Microgasterinae by Brues (1910), Statz (1938) and Tobias (1987); it was reranked as the subfamily Microgastrinae by Belokobylskij (2014) and Whitfield et al. (2018).

It was assigned to Hymenoptera by Förster (1862); and to Braconidae by Brues (1910), Statz (1938), Tobias (1987), Belokobylskij (2014) and Whitfield et al. (2018).
