Taxonomy
Mapesites chautauquaensis was named by Work and Boardman (2003). Its type specimen is SUI 62428, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Little Pawnee at Peru, Kansas, which is in a Virgilian coastal shale in the Cass Limestone Formation of Kansas. It is the type species of Mapesites.
