Joviatrypa was named by Copper (1995) [Sepkoski's age data: S Ldov-m S Wenl Sepkoski's reference number: 1179]. It is not extant. Its type is Joviatrypa brabyla.

It was assigned to Atrypinae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Atrypida by Sepkoski (2002).
