Leptocoelina was named by Johnson (1970) [Sepkoski's age data: D Sieg]. Its type is Leptocoelina squamosa.

It was assigned to Leptocoeliidae by Johnson (1970) and Williams et al. (2002); and to Atrypida by Sepkoski (2002).

J. G. Johnson 1970Leptocoeliid brachiopods with relatively numerous, evenly spaced, concentric growth lamellae and sparse, low, radial plications. Ventral diductors small, narrow, and anteriorly platformed; cardinalia includes a simple, knoblike cardinal process.
