Goniatites expansus was named by Vanuxem (1842). It is the type species of Agoniatites.
It was synonymized subjectively with Agoniatites (Agoniatites) costulatus by Göddertz (1987); it was recombined as Agoniatites expansus by Korn and Klug (2002).
