Goniatites terebratus was named by Sandberger and Sandberger (1850). It is the type species of Maenioceras.
It was recombined as Maenioceras (Maenioceras) terebratum by Göddertz (1987); it was recombined as Maenioceras terebratum by Korn and Klug (2002).
