Taxonomy
Plectatrypa was named by Schuchert and Cooper (1930). It is the type genus of Plectatrypinae.

It was corrected as Plectatrypa by Mitchell (1977) and Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Carinatininae by Bassett and Cocks (1974) and Mitchell (1977); to Atrypidae by Jin and Chatterton (1997); and to Atrypida by Sepkoski (2002).
