Orthis tricenaria was named by Conrad (1843). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Hesperorthis tricenaria by Bassett and Cocks (1974), Jin and Chatterton (1997), Jin and Zhan (2008), Rubel (2011), Jakobsen et al. (2014) and Liljeroth et al. (2017).
