Rhinotreta was named by Holmer (1986) [ ]. Its type is Rhinotreta muscularis.

It was assigned to Ephippelasmatinae by Holmer (1986) and Holmer (1989); to Ephippelasmatidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Atrypida by Sepkoski (2002).
