Spinatrypa was named by Stainbrook (1951). It is the type genus of Spinatrypinae.
It was assigned to Atrypinae by Bassett and Cocks (1974) and Jones (1982); to Spinatrypinae by Savage and Baxter (1995) and Williams et al. (2002); and to Atrypida by Sepkoski (2002).
