Taxonomy
Leptosphinctes leptus was named by Buckman (1920). It is the type species of Leptosphinctes, Leptosphinctes (Leptosphinctes).

It was recombined as Leptosphinctes (Leptosphinctes) leptus by Besnosov and Mitta (1993) and Galacz (2012).
