Taxonomy
Orbicula forbesi was named by Davidson (1848). It is the type species of Orbiculoidea.

It was recombined as Orbiculoidea forbesi by Mitchell (1977), Owen and Harper (1982) and Holmer (1987); it was recombined as Orbiculoidea forbesa by Holmer (1989).
