Taxonomy
Afilasma was named by Stehli (1961) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fras-u D Fame Sepkoski's reference number: 1,538]. Its type is Afilasma beecheri. It is the type genus of Afilasmatinae.

It was assigned to Heterelasminidae by Savage and Baxter (1995); to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Afilasmatinae by Williams et al. (2006).
