Gervillia praecursor was named by Quenstedt (1858).

It was recombined as Avicula praecursor by Henry (1876); it was recombined as Bakevellia praecursor by Yao et al. (2007); it was recombined as Bakevellia (Bakevelloides) praecursor by Marquez-Aliaga et al. (2010).
