Alithyris was named by Sun (1981) [Sepkoski's age data: K u Sepkoski's reference number: 881]. Its type is Alithyris shiquanheensis. It is the type genus of Alithyridinae.
It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Alithyridinae by Williams et al. (2006).
