Apatecosia was named by Cooper (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: J Call-m Sepkoski's reference number: 877,882]. Its type is Cererithyris nutiensis.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lissajousithyridinae by Williams et al. (2006).
