Pachyrukhos was named by Ameghino (1885). It is not extant.

It was corrected as Pachyrucos by Lydekker (1894), Ameghino (1894) and Rovereto (1914); it was misspelled as Pachyrucos by Ameghino (1901), Sinclair (1908), Carroll (1988), Kramarz et al. (2010), Seoane et al. (2017), Vizcaíno et al. (2022) and Seoane et al. (2023).

It was assigned to Pachyrucidae by Lydekker (1894); to Hegetotheridae by Ameghino (1894); to Pachyrukhinae by Seoane et al. (2017); to Hegetotheriidae by Ameghino (1901), Sinclair (1908), Rovereto (1914), Carroll (1988), Kramarz et al. (2010) and Vizcaíno et al. (2022); and to Pachyrukhini by Seoane et al. (2023).
