Atelithyris was named by Smirnova (1975) [Sepkoski's age data: K Berr K Haut-l Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. Its type is Atelithyris crestensis.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Harpotothyrididae by Williams et al. (2006).
