Athyrorhynchia was named by Xu and Liu (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr m Sepkoski's reference number: 881]. Its type is Athyrorhynchia athyroformis.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dielasmatoidea by Williams et al. (2007).
