Taxonomy
Ammonites spinosus was named by Sowerby (1826). It is the type species of Kosmoceras.

It was recombined as Cosmoceras spinosum by Jeannet (1951) and Imlay (1953); it was recombined as Kosmoceras spinosum by Reyment (1971).
