Taxonomy
Nucleolaria cowlitziana was named by Groves (1994). Its type specimen is UCMP 39837, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is UCMP Loc. D-8040 - Cowlitz River, which is in a Bartonian deep-water siltstone in the Cowlitz Formation of Washington.

L. T. Groves 1994A Nucleolaria with prominent dorsal nodules connected by fine threads, a dorsal sulcus, and a deep fossula.

Shell shape ovoid, medium in size; spire covered; maximum height slightly posterior of midpoint; dorsal groove faint; dorsal nodules smooth, circular, connected by fine threads that extend onto ventral surfaces and form prominent denticulation; slight marginal callus; aperture slightly curved posteriorly toward columella; denticulation prominent with smooth interstices, labial lip with 19 teeth, columellar lip with 18 teeth; fossula with strong denticulation; anterior and posterior canals prominently lengthened by terminal teeth.
