Cardiarina was named by Cooper (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc-u C Step Sepkoski's reference number: 871]. Its type is Cardiarina cordata. It is the type genus of Cardiarinidae.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cardiarinidae by Williams et al. (2007).
