Caucasothyris was named by Dagys (1974) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Nori Sepkoski's reference number: 538]. Its type is Caucasothyris angustiplicatus.

It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Angustothyrididae by Williams et al. (2006).
