Coenothyris was named by Douvillé (1879) [Sepkoski's age data: ]. It is not extant.

It was reranked as Terebratula (Coenothyris) by Bittner (1890).

It was assigned to Terebratula by Bittner (1890); to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Dielasmatinae by Feldman (2002), Williams et al. (2006) and Guo et al. (2019).
