Taxonomy
Ammonites maculatus was named by Young and Bird (1822).

It was recombined as Aegoceras (Aegoceras) maculatum by Meister (1986); it was recombined as Aegoceras maculatum by Meister and Friebe (2003); it was recombined as Androgynoceras maculatum by Howarth (1956) and Wittler and Roth (2003).
