Cryptacanthia was named by White and St John (1867) [Sepkoski's age data: C Mosc P Tatr Sepkoski's reference number: 1,2,538,1066]. Its type is Waldheimia compacta. It is the type genus of Cryptacanthiinae.
It was assigned to Terebratulida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cryptacanthiinae by Williams et al. (2006).
